Leicestershire is a county of diverse, integrated and cohesive communities and cultures and one steeped in history. The majority of people think their area is a place where people from different backgrounds get on and that their neighbourhood is a ‘good’ or ‘very good’ place to live.
Leicestershire Together is seeking to empower these communities. We aspire for communities to define themselves, so that the members identify with each other, recognise other communities, and engage effectively with the organisations and people who plan and provide their public services.
This can be achieved through a variety of means, which Leicestershire Together are concentrating on. We aim to ensure that:
- the Social capital in individual communities and neighbourhoods is enhanced
- that the diversity of the County is reflected and respected and is not a barrier to accessing services or opportunities
- opportunities for volunteering - a key element to building community spirit and cohesion – are significantly increased
- opportunities for shared recreational, sporting and cultural are significantly increased
The delivery plans for securing stronger and more cohesive communities across Leicestershire:
- How we are helping people feel that they belong to their neighbourhood, get on well with their neighbours and feel that the influence where they live (NI 1,2 & 4)
- How we are improving parish councils (LI 6)
- How we are increasing volunteering (NI 6) & Aug - Oct 09 activity report
- How we are helping young people participate in positive activities (NI 110)
- How we are improving the quality of information older people receive so that they can access services (NI139)
